Sail for Charity

Team Sail for Charity 2007

Cowes 07 Crew Our Crew for the 2007 campaign was a mix of some crew returning from the Cowes '06 team and some new team members selected from numerous applicants, friends, and other contacts. The crew worked hard on both the competitive racing, and on the fund-raising for the Ellen Macarthur Trust.

The crew list with positions (back to front) for Cowes Week 2007 was as follows:

Skipper and helm - Peter Newlands

Crew -
Iain Bartlett-Massey - tactics
Greg Conary - nav
Robert Govier - main
Lucy Frost - pit
Paul Irons - lead trimmer
Emily Young - genoa/spinnaker trim
Karen Crosland - genoa trim
Dean Frost - pit crew/winches/trim
Andy Tonge - pit crew/winches
Andy Crosland - sail handling/back-up pit crew
Dave Mason - mast/foredeck
Andrew Holme - bowman

Peter Newlands, Anticipation's owner and skipper, has a highly personable and unpretentious approach whether racing, training or charter cruising. Racing Successes (lifted from www.newseas.co.uk) include
Dinghy: Cowes Dinghy Week Champion and Laser Masters Champion, Olympic 470 World Champion, Pre-Olympic Champion, 12 years in British Olympic Sailing Squad
Yacht: Beneteau Cup Champion 2004, 2nd in Cowes Week 2004 and 2006, Won Fastnet Race helming (Rubin), Won Admirals Cup (incl Fastnet) in British Team (Yeoman), Won numerous races including Britannia Cup on Chernikeef II (Farr52)
Hybrid: current British Blokart (land yacht) champion 2005/6

Iain Bartlett-Massey Iain Bartlett-Massey
Qualified as a commercially endorsed yachtmaster, Iain has been sailing since age 12 aboard a variety of vessels worldwide. Owner of his own Beneteau First, Iain has also done many boat deliveries in the Med as well as around UK and Europe. A newcomer to the Sail For Charity crew Iain is up the challenge that Cowes Week will throw at him.

Greg + Karen Greg Conary
Pictured here on the rail with Karen Crosland during Cowes '06 training. A sailor for over 25 years Greg has a wealth of experience in a variety of races, both here in the UK as well as over in USA, where he skippers his own Beneteau. Having sailed in Cowes Weeks in previous years, Greg is looking forward to being part of the Sail for Charity Team again this year.

Robert Govier Robert Govier
A keen dinghy sailor on Lasers and Catamarans, Robert joined Sail for Charity for part of Cowes '06 and enjoyed main trimming. Robert is looking froward to Cowes 2007 as a full crew member.

Karen Crosland Karen Crosland
A sailor for many years, Karen has undertaken Round the Island challenges, Cowes Week, Guernsey Little Britain as well as organising and being part of an all girl Women in Property team at 3 Little Britain Challenges. As well as working full time in the property industry, and being a mum, Karen is now masterminding Sail For Charity and its respective fund-raising … never a dull moment!

Andy Crosland Andy Crosland
After starting dinghy sailing about 12 years ago Andy has progressed to keelboats, and now a Day Skipper has enjoyed various cruising charters (West Coast of Scotland + Med) as well as sailing his own Pandora then Jaguar 27 yachts for the last 5 years. After the Round the Island in 2005, and 2006, plus Cowes Week and the Beneteau Cup in 2006, Andy definitely has a taste for yacht racing!

Lucy Frost Lucy Frost
A commercially endorsed RYA yachtmaster offshore lucy has been sailing for a number of years both around the UK and abroad. With over 9,100 miles logged she has undertaken all roles onboard and has many strings to her bow including radio qualifications, safety aboard, diesel engine certificates, personal survival and firefighting.

Dean Frost Dean Frost
A competent dayskipper Dean has been sailing around the uk and as far afield as Australia over recent years, aboard a variety of vessles from Hallberg Rassy 36 to the Challenge 72 yachts. Dean is looking forward to his first season with the Sail For Charity crew.

Dave Mason Dave Mason
Having sailed for the last 8 years Dave is looking forward to joining the crew for 2007. Both a dinghy and yacht sailor and Day Skipper, he has crewed such as Round the Island and Cowes Weeks previously. In contrast to his day job as an IT consultant Dave is happiest when the wind is blowing, and the spray is flying - so long as he's on a boat, that is!

No Text Andrew Holme joins Team Sail for Charity as an experienced bowman, having spent many years crossing the Atlantic and racing closer to home in RORC races. Much time has been spent as bowman aboard Venom (Volvo 60) and with over 13,000 miles to date his sailing also includes Fastnets, ARCraces, Cowes weeks and many delivery trips.

Andy Tonge Andy Tonge
First got the bug at school dinghy sailing club, racing Mirrors and GP’s. Also a keen windsurfer, Andy's experience on board Yachts, includes skippering a Moody 26 on a family holiday on the Caledonian Canal, and sailing on Andy and Karen’s Pandora and Jaguar 27. Last year’s highlight was a week’s sailing a Pearson 40 in San Francisco (see photo!) - a new experience which Andy really enjoyed leaving San Francisco wanting more - so Cowes 07 is a great opportunity, and to raise money for charity too!

Emily Young Emily Young
Emily has been sailing dingys since a young age, and until the age of 18 raced competitively at Bosham and Itchenor sailing clubs, first in Mirrors and then progressing into 420s. Emily first took part in Cowes Week 2005 aboard a Swan 40, and raced with the same crew again in 2006. Since starting university she hasn't been able to spend as much time on the water as she'd like, so is especially looking forward to joining Team Sail for Charity for Cowes Week 2007 - not only for the racing side of things; Emily is proud to be part of a team which will be raising money for a really worthwhile cause.

Paul Irons Paul Irons was a late-comer to the team in 2007; Paul came a long "to help out" early on during Cowes Week, and quickly became an important part of the team - particularly when it came to flying the spinnakers - especially that big Asymmetric!
